Lawrence “Larry” O’Brien

Larry O’Brien earned an Associate’s degree in Human Services from Cape Cod Community College in 2013, along with Certificates in Alcohol/Substance Abuse Counselor I and II. While at CCCC he was actively involved with the Legacy Club and worked with student veterans.

He went on to study for his Bachelor’s degree in social work at Bridgewater State University. After earning a Master’s degree in social work at the University of New England, he quickly attained his license as a clinical social worker.

Social work is Larry’s second career, after retiring from the United States Coast Guard. While attending college he interned and worked as staff at two sober houses. He spent a school year interning and volunteering at Southeast Alternative School in Sandwich. He also worked as a Job Coach for the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission and Cape Organization for the Rights of the Disabled.

Larry is now a member of the clinical team at Phoenix Rising Trauma and Recovery Center. In this role he provides clients with individual substance abuse and mental health therapy. He also is the facilitator for recovery groups.

Larry regularly volunteers at local schools and events as Santa Claus. He has also assisted at community events like the Housing Assistance Corporation’s “Big Fix.”

The College is very proud of the accomplishments and community service of Larry O’Brien and honors him as the 2024 Alumnus of the Year.
